- Though I was born by the ocean in MA, I mostly grew up at the end of a dirt road in Vermont. I majored in English at Northeastern University in Boston, and planned to attend law school. While working as a paralegal, I became restless and full of wanderlust. I decided to volunteer to teach. This lead to five months in Ghana, West Africa in 2003. During that time I taught at a Junior Secondary School and also spent two weeks traveling along Ghana's coast. The experience changed my life in many ways. Specifically, it inspired me to pursue a career in education. Upon returning to the US, I taught in Boston briefly with Citizen Schools before moving to Brooklyn, New York as a Teach for America Corps Member in 2005. I just completed my fifth year teaching English Language Arts (grades 6-8) on the Academy of Performing Arts at the Ronald Edmonds Learning Center. I received my Masters Degree in Secondary English in 2006. In 2008, I spent a month in Kenya setting up a literacy program at St. Mary's Rescue Center.
